- North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve (NCNERR) There are four individual components to the NCNERR: Currituck Banks, Rachel Carson, Masonboro Island and Zeke's Island. North Carolina's Estuarine system, the third largest in the country, encompasses more than two million acres. This system is the economic foundation of the coastal area. More than 90% of the commercial fish species caught in North Carolina spend some part of their lives in an estuary.
