- Ulane v. Eastern Airlines (7th. Cir., 1984) Negative: a federal Court of Appeals ruled a transsexual woman was not discriminated against "because she is female, but because Ulane is a transsexual." Upheld by the Supreme Court.
- Maffei v. Kolaeton Industries, Inc. (1995) Positive: a state court in New York City finds that the New York City Human Right Law's prohibition against "gender" discrimination applies to a transsexual man.
- Brockton MA Court Rules in Favor of Transgender Student (2000) Positive: A Massachusetts Superior Court ruled that a middle school may not prohibit a transgender student from expressing her gender identity even if that expression does not conform with the sex ascribed to her at birth.
